When injections fail to be an effective treatment for pain, more invasive surgical procedures like lumbar
fusion may be required to address cord or nerve root compression. Sometimes this “decompression”
procedure only involves removing the posterior elements (laminectomies with or without
foraminotomies). Other times the procedure may also involve removal of the disc (discectomy) and
fusion of the lumbar vertebra.
These lumbar fusion illustrations effectively demonstrate the soft tissue disruption involved with
placing hardware, as well as the delicate vascular and neurological structures that are retracted in
order to access the spine. The medical illustrations below demonstrate recommended archive exhibits on
lumbar fusion. For custom exhibits, which show your client's actual surgical procedure, hardware and
post-operative radiology films, contact our team of medical illustrators for a complimentary consultation.
